Notable Features

Presently, June's hair is a bright, unmistakable red that she's not terribly fussed with pinning back. It falls in her eyes a lot, and it's not unusual for her to look harried and unkempt. If there are random leaves, flowers or twigs in her hair, it's a coin toss whether she's aware of them.

Personal Style

Wispy or willowy are good adjectives for June's personal sense of style. "Vaguely chaotic" works, too, if you're being less generous. She doesn't set much store with abiding by the form-fitting fashions one finds in the city: Her corsets are worn only snug enough to support the girls, and her dresses are more plain peasant-style than sumptuous Victorian. She only wears britches if she knows she will be riding a horse. She loves bright colors and prints, and almost always has fresh or dried flowers tucked in her hair or pinned to her breast. She often goes barefoot when she's in her shop, or out of town (too gross in the main streets), so dusty feet are common.

Circumstances

Currently

These days, June keeps to a rhythm all her own. She rises with the sun, barefoot and bleary-eyed, to open the Green Jar Apothecary in downtown Never — Although "open" is a very loose term. Some days she forgets the sign, other days the door's open before dawn. Locals come to her for everything from stubborn coughs to cursed trinkets, and she treats each with a blend of sharp intuition and earthy magic. Both the shop and her circus carriage home is cluttered with drying herbs, jars of dubious liquids, and the odd stray cat. June trades in favors and eggs more often than coin, and the Never Mining Co. quietly pays her rent to keep their workers whole. She laughs loudly, loves messily, and bears her empathic burden with a kind of chaotic grace. Though she aches under the weight of others' pain, she wouldn't give up her gift when there's still so much to heal.

Health & Capabilities

This varies wildly day-to-day on account of both her talents and "miracle." Any major healing will take a toll on her overall energy, in some cases putting her in bed for days. If she around people — Which she enjoys, and feels is her purpose — chances are she's in some degree of mental or physical pain. It's not unusual for her human customers to presume she has some sort of chronic ailment.

When she has spent sufficient time alone, she is the picture of vibrant health. This just tends to not last long.

Socioeconomics

Socioeconomics have not concerned June for many years, which is fortunate, because she doesn't have much. Almost two decades ago, she stopped accepting money for her services and has not felt much want from the change, although it does require a very simple, pared down life. Her home is a metal circus carriage gifted to her in return for saving the life of a trapeze artist who took a terrible fall. The rent on her shop in Never is paid by the Never Mining Co. in return for her treating their employees.

Which is not to paint the picture of a blithely unconcerned nature witch dancing through the forest in want of nothing. Before Never, June experience many a lean month or year, times when her talents were unwanted or even feared, and the next town many miles away. She has an eye for bright, pretty things, and is not without an impractical envious streak that is more wont to accept something shiny when what she really needs is a hot meal.

Background

History

Born in the salty air of a fishing village on the coast of Maine, Juniper Quill came into the world with a caul over her face and a mother who knew what that meant. The third daughter of a long line of women with witch blood, June was raised on tinctures and tea leaves, raised to listen more than speak, and to keep her magic close until the world asked for it. It rarely did, but a restless youth drove her onto the road to ply her trade and expose herself to the world in all its variety.

She drifted from town to town, peddling cures and charms for the price of a loaf of bread or a clean bedroll. She had years of plenty, and years of nothing. Years where she felt adored, and others when she was run off with lit torches. Her heart has known tenderness and shattering both, most notably when she fell in love with a widowed liveryman outside of Chicago, and spent five long, difficult years trying to mend his broken spirit, despite that her specialty lay in mending the physical. He took his own life while she lay sleeping in the next room. She has never again assumed she can fix what doesn't want fixing, but the aftermath of this single event continues to reverberate through June's life.

Filled with heartache and guilt, she dropped to her knees and prayed for deeper understanding of her patients' pains, so that she might better heal them. The angel that answered, Tabris, provided a blessing that was more of a curse: June was given the literal ability to feel the pain of those around her. Stubbed toes, festering wounds, yes, but also the crushing loneliness of the widowed, the gnawing shame of the outcast, the cold, spiraling panic of a mother who has lost her child. It is a gift that makes June deeply effective, but also deeply fragile. Her eccentric appearance masks a mind perpetually walking the edge between empathy and overwhelm.

Juniper came to Never by way of a debt repaid: A circus carriage gifted to her after saving the life of a trapeze artist some five years prior. It remains her home, modest and warm, tucked just past Downtown in the less-populated area of Hillside. In Never, she's found what feels like her final landing spot. The mining company covers her rent in exchange for tending their sick and broken, and the town folk mostly adore her, or at least find her useful. She's restless, rarely comfortable, but rooted now, like a wildflower growing through a crack in the desert stone.

Powers Use

🌿 Pocket Charms - This includes the sort of casual magic most witches employ in the course of ordinary life, and which non-supernatural beings seldom notice: Warming a cold cup of tea, fortifying a plant so that it blooms early, changing the color of her hair.

🌿 Minor Mending - June would consider these within the same category as pocket charms for herself, but they are worth singling out because her innate type/talents allow these to be performed quickly, intuitively, and with ease. Some examples would include mending a tear in a shirt, or healing a small cut.

🌿 Heavy Healing - Endemic to June's particular witch type. This is the big stuff, the physical healing that she most excels at, and which saps her energy. When someone is dying, June is the person you want to see, although afterwards she may disappear into the wilderness for several days.

🌿 Perception - A result of the "miracle" granted to her by the angel Tabris. The closer a person is in proximity to June, the more acutely she can feel their physical and mental states. Skin-to-skin contact is essentially a direct, unfettered line.

Miracle
As an entity, Tabris is often labeled as having "youthful energy"; more aptly, they are "chaotic good," and not given to considering long-term circumstances for the so-called miracles they fling out like so much candy.

When June prayed for a means to better understand the ailments — Physical and mental — that her customers presented with, in the binary thinking of Tabris, allowing June to experience what others were feeling was just the ticket.

Reader, it was a ticket for a roller coaster.

Juniper has been imbued with the ability to, herself, feel what those in her proximity are feeling, whether it be a stubbed toe or the depths of immeasurable grief. The closer she physically gets, the stronger the connection, with skin-to-skin contact the most potent.

Sex is great, so there's that. June's not sure if that makes up for feeling like she's going insane most of the rest of the time.
