Character Guidelines

General Requirements

• Supernatural aspects must fit within our guidelines.
• All character must be at least 16-years-old. (Please note that sexual content is not permitted for characters younger than 18.)

Historical Requirements

We are fairly flexible with regard to how your character fits within the scope of history — We consider our game a historical AU. However, we do have one rule: Characters may not be an actual historical figure. They may, however, be related to them.

We would also like to give some guidance on handling potentially problematic topics IC (such as discrimination based on race or sexuality or gender):

• We will never dictate to you whether you can or cannot play these sorts of plots, and we don't feel a need to cause anyone stress or harm out of a slavish devotion to historical accuracy. We're here to write stories and have fun. If you would like to choose an FC of color and not have to deal with the extremely heavy historical context of that, you may do so without issue. If you would like to tell a queer story that doesn't end in tragedy, please do.
• Obviously some historical context will need to remain, but in all seriousness, please do not let these issues deter you from something you might like to explore.
• By the same token, you may play these topics out as much as you like — just use TW notices as needed.

Face Requirements

• Face claims may be anyone whose face is deliberately part of their "public brand."
• Deceased face claims are allowed, provided the person has been deceased for a minimum of 10 years.
• Face claims may be used at any point in their career to reflect the age of the character.

Application Requirements

If you are submitting your first two applications, please scroll down for information.

To submit a new application to NNM after your first two, you need to meet the following requirements:

1. Have at least 3000 points across your accounts - You earn points by writing on the site. The admin will remove the 3k from your accounts as is easiest unless you designate where the points should be removed from when you submit your app.
2. All of your active characters must have either 10 in-character posts OR 2000 in-character words, whichever you prefer.
3. Have all characters in good standing - Please see the Activity Guidelines for more details on what "good standing" entails. If one of your characters was archived not in good standing, the 6 month ban on applications as detailed on the Activity Guidelines applies.
4. If applying for an Angel or Demon, have an upgrade token in your inventory.

First-Time Applicants

All new players are granted two free new character application tokens, and one free upgrade to Angel/Demon. (The staff may not allocate these to you until you submit your first app for the sake of ease, but we know you have them!) These do not expire, although your player account may be archived if you go an extended period without applying for anyone.

These first two characters do NOT need the requirements listed above to be met. However, after your first two characters, to apply for anyone additional, the requirements in the list above will have to be met for ALL characters, including the ones submitted via the new character tokens.

How to Fill Out an Application

We use a profile-based application, meaning the information you submit will be filled in via and shown on your character's profile. You may edit your character's profile here via your UCP. (There is a permanent link to your UCP at the top right of each page, if you click on your username to access the drop-down menu.) There are directions on the "Edit Profile" page for each field, and whether they are required for your application. We've tried to make sure the directions are clear, but if something isn't, please don't hesitate to hit up the Discord server #help-desk.

If you would like guidance on ANY part of the application — From history to image cropping — please @App Assist in our Discord server! These are folks who have volunteered to help!

APPLICATION DETAILS

Because we are writing collaboratively, we ask players to include any/all salient details about their character in their applications rather than being vague for purposes of "mystery" or humor. Please remember that your character's application/profile serves as a reference for other writers — Being as clear as possible helps others plot with you!

How to Submit a Completed Application

1. Ensure each required field on your character's profile is completed to the given standards.
2. Ensure that your character account is linked to your player account.
3. Submit a new ticket via the #app-submission channel in our Discord server. Easy-peasy! A mod will reply with confirmation of receipt/claiming ASAP. Please do not inquire after your application unless it has been 5 full days since submission. We're super excited for your character, but ask for your patience!

A note on new character activity

If a character's application is approved but they have zero in-character posts at the end of 30 days, they will be automatically archived.
