Oliver Millard was born and raised in the chaotic streets of Chicago, where mischief was second nature. With parents mostly absent throughout his childhood, Oliver spent his early years learning to fend for himself, often hearing strange voices that he assumed were signs of madness. It wasn’t until he was twelve, when an aunt revealed to him that these voices were not a sign of insanity but a gift — Capital-S “Sight” into the next world — that he began to understand his true nature.
Left largely to his own devices, Oliver honed his abilities in secret. Without proper guidance, he learned to tap into the spirit world, at first to entertain himself, but soon enough to manipulate it for his gain. Using his talent for illusions, he began conning unsuspecting marks, pretending to communicate with the dead while fleecing them for their money. It was a profitable but dangerous game, until four years ago when he crossed the wrong ghost. The vengeful spirit unleashed a series of terrifying events that forced Oliver to flee Chicago, desperate for a peaceful night’s sleep.
After bouncing from one town to the next, Oliver was drawn to Never, a place with its own strange aura. There, he has begun to ply his trade once more, offering his services as a spiritual medium. But as he reconnects with the spirit world, Oliver senses that there’s something darker about Never — Something that might just require more than illusions to survive.
Edward Jackson
Edward and his younger brother Theo grew up together in a working-class family in Manassas, Virginia. Their schoolteacher mother ensured their education and encouraged their aspirations. Six years ago, after several trips west and a good deal of careful research, the brothers took their savings and invested in a modest, well-kept general store in the growing town of Never, New Mexico. The two have since become fixtures in the town, their business an undeniable success. Lately, they have been looking to expand into other investments to serve the booming population, and have been at loggerheads: Edward, the more disciplined and cautious of the two, remains unconvinced by many of his younger, more impulsive brother’s ideas.
Marguerite “Rita” Griffin
Rita is a REVENANT SPIRIT.
Marguerite Griffin — Rita, to those who know her — is a woman who has always lived by quick wits and quicker lies. Once, long ago, she was a grifter’s daughter, raised in a painted wagon that rattled along the East Coast, peddling false cures and impossible promises. Born in 1772 to a family of travelers and tricksters, deception was her birthright. She wore it well until the night in 1800 when the con caught up with her: A knife in the dark. A pair of angry hands. A body sinking into the Ohio River.
But Rita never truly left.
Now, more than eighty years later, she lingers in Never, working at the Silk Rose as if she belongs there, wearing borrowed smiles and dresses that never seem to collect dust. No one questions where she came from. No one notices that she never eats, never tires, never leaves so much as a footprint in the dust outside her room. She keeps her secret well… until the rains come.
Rita cannot cross water. Even the thought of the creek to the east of town makes her breath hitch, though there is no breath left in her lungs. And sometimes, when the wind howls through Never’s streets, she swears she can still feel the weight of cold, dark water pulling her under.
Doli “Doe” Solares
Doe is the eldest of Lee Solares’ children, and she’s always taken the responsibility seriously. Sweet-natured and dutiful, she’s devoted herself to the protection of her brother and the caretaking of her family–a title she extends to the workers, riders and cowhands of the Double Six ranch. Her predictability made her sudden disappearance–and reappearance, one month later–even more of a disturbing shock for those that loved her best. Her cheerful disposition remained unchanged, and her total refusal to explain both the absence and the pregnancy that resulted from it revealed a stubborn streak that had always run straight down to the bone. Plenty of people outside the family have trouble understanding how sullen, awkward Aracely came from bright and big-hearted Doe, but the Solares clan isn’t much surprised. Whatever the price for her only child, Doe paid it gladly.
Julián Aguilar
Always a solemn child, Julián embodied the archetype of the eldest son–responsible and obedient. His personality combined the best of his father’s determination and his mother’s patience, and even his adolescent years were mostly absent the usual teenage rebellions. When it became clear that he hadn’t inherited his mother’s magic, he channeled that disappointment into proving himself useful in other ways: excellence in his work; care for his siblings; expansion of the family business. He kept any uncertainties or insecurities contained behind a serene exterior. His family teased that he showed more affection toward the horses they stabled than toward anyone outside the family, and he smiled along, but the truth was that he kept his passions just as secret as his doubts. No one knew that his great romance ended in tragedy. No one understands that when he buries himself more thoroughly in work than ever before, they’re witnessing the aftermath of personal catastrophe.
Samuel Grey
Samuel Grey is the silver-tongued mayor of Never, a rare beacon of civilization in the wild frontier. A devoted father to his two sons and daughter, he presents himself as a pragmatic and forward-thinking leader, skilled in diplomacy and shrewd in negotiation. Under his steady hand, Never has flourished — Its streets are orderly, its coffers full, and its citizens unknowingly living within the carefully crafted boundaries of his design.
But beneath the fine waistcoats and practiced smiles, Samuel Grey is no mere man. He is a demon of ancient cunning, building Never into a proving ground where lost souls are nudged ever so gently toward corruption. Unlike the crude horrors of the infernal ranks, Samuel understands that true damnation isn’t forced, it’s chosen. He does not tempt with fire and brimstone, but with comfort, ambition, and whispered justifications.
At the heart of his scheme is the Grey Family Estate, a grand but unsettling mansion in the town’s wealthy neighborhood of Greystone. Within its study lies a massive ledger, bound in shadow-black leather, where Samuel carefully records every citizen’s moral debts: Their sins, their regrets, their quiet compromises. Each entry is more than ink; it is a tally in a game the townsfolk don’t know they’re playing.
Alice Storen
Alice Storen is a woman of independence, strength, and restless energy. She’s as much at home in the saddle as she is among the ranch’s sprawling acres, her skills as a horsewoman renowned by anyone who’s had the pleasure of witnessing her ride. Unmarried and disinterested in the idea of a husband or children, Alice has always been more focused on her freedom than on societal expectations. She’s never once been tempted by the idea of a traditional life, preferring the wide-open spaces of the ranch and the wild, unpredictable nature of her powers.
Alice has a deep connection to the earth, the wind, and the sky. She can summon rain in a drought or calm a storm before it hits, though she prefers to keep her powers subtle, using them only when absolutely necessary. Her control over nature is as strong as her determination to carve out a life on her own terms.
Despite her independent nature, Alice feels a restlessness she can’t shake. She’s loyal to her brother, Willard, and supports him in every way she can, especially after the tragedies that have haunted him. But as she spends her days tending to the ranch and navigating the strange dynamics of Never, she can’t ignore the gnawing feeling that there’s more for her out there — A life that might not be bound by the same rules or constraints. While she loves her brother dearly, Alice feels like something is calling her beyond the ranch, and she’s not sure how much longer she can keep that desire for freedom buried.
Aaron Bayliss
Aaron Baylis came west from the Midwest in search of freedom, fresh air, and a new start. He traded the crowded streets of the city for the open skies of New Mexico, thinking the job of sheriff in a small, quiet town like Never would offer a slower pace and a chance to settle into his own skin. But Never is anything but ordinary.
Still new to the role, Aaron is adapting to the town’s oddities — Strange behavior, unusual disappearances, the occasional unexplainable event — with the kind of steady patience that makes him well-liked by locals. He doesn’t yet realize the town hides supernatural forces in plain sight, but he’s beginning to suspect there’s something off about Never. Oddly enough, it’s a feeling he doesn’t mind. Perhaps it’s because Aaron himself is no stranger to secrecy. Quietly gay in a time and place that offers little safety for it, he’s learned how to guard pieces of himself from the world.
As the mysteries around him grow deeper, Aaron begins to wonder if this strange, watchful town might be the one place where a man like him — One with secrets, heart, and hope — might actually belong.
Sidney Grey
Sidney Grey is the youngest son of Never’s esteemed mayor — A boy of privilege, charm, and restless curiosity. On the cusp of adulthood, he is caught between the expectations of his family and the wild pull of the frontier beyond his father’s well-ordered streets. Raised on etiquette and ambition, Sidney has been groomed for leadership, but something inside him resists the path laid before him. There is an itch beneath his skin, a feeling like forgotten words on the tip of his tongue.
What Sidney doesn’t know is that his father is a demon, his mother a witch, and the strange, flickering talents surfacing within him are the inheritance of both. Shadows lengthen when he is angry. Candles die when he enters a room. Sometimes, when he dreams, he wakes with soot on his fingertips and the distant echo of a voice he does not recognize.
