Personal Style

Esmedora dresses in elegant black, her clothing form-fitting enough to press at the edges of propriety despite covering most of her body. Often seen outdoors in high collars, floor-length skirts, and tailored coats, her garments are adorned with subtle silver details—in buttons, brooches, or clasps—each piece fashionably out of date, like a shadow from another century. In the comfort of her home, however, she sheds all pretense, wearing nothing but silk slips or lace lingerie, a creature of habit wrapped in quiet decadence.

Occupation

Embalmer
Circumstances

Currently

Known as “La Dama de la Muerta” (The Lady of the Dead) behind her back—respected, feared, and rarely spoken to—Esmé is summoned quietly to prepare the bodies of outlaws, children, town residents, and even unidentifiable corpses dragged in by lawmen. The old ladies of the town suspect her of being a witch, and she is called a “sinful beauty” by men who stare too long—and regret it later.

Esmadora enjoys living in her house on the outskirts of town, just beyond the graveyards, where she can comfortably whisper to the dead. Her three massive Irish wolfhounds are always at her side—and their presence in town can only mean that death is near.

She is feared, revered, and always in demand.

Health & Capabilities

Mental Health:
⛧solitary, not unstable: Esmé is composed and mentally sharp. she speaks with spirits yes- but she's grounded.

⛧Burdened by empathy: She doesn't show it but constant exposure to death and grief and lingering spirits takes an emotional toll sending her in long periods of melancholy or emotional fatigue.

⛧ Detached but not numb: She's not cruel or cold, she has simply learned to compartmentalize. Her poise masks a deeply feeling soul.

⛧ Sleep is uneasy: Nightmares and whispers from the other side plague her in her sleep, she relys on her herbal infusions and rituals to sleep better in days or somedays she justs lets them torment her.

Physical health:

⛧slim, poised and precise: Her body is well maintained and her hands are steady and her constitution is strong thanks to her work.

⛧Sensitive to extremes: has physical reactions to intense environments ( too much noise, crowds or strong sunlight, etc.)

⛧Endurance over strength: she is far from brawny but she can work long hours standing over her embalming table and walks the graveyard in silence for miles.

⛧Pale from candlelight and shadow: she is not sickly, not sun-kissed for sure but she has the look of someone who lives more by moonlight than by day.

Socioeconomics

⛧Professionally respected but socially isolated: As the town’s embalmer and “witch,” she’s always in demand and earns a steady, respectable income. People pay her well for her rare and necessary skills.

⛧Modest wealth: She lives comfortably in a well-maintained house just outside town near the graveyards. Her lifestyle is simple but elegant—fine clothes, quality supplies, and a well-kept home, but no grand extravagance.

⛧Self-sufficient: She grows some of her own herbs and maintains her supplies independently, minimizing reliance on expensive goods. And the massive wolfhounds aren’t just guardians but excellent hunters, bringing game from the wilderness for dinner.

⛧Fringe social standing: Feared and respected, but never fully embraced by polite society. Her reputation keeps many at arm’s length, so she doesn’t participate much in town affairs or high society events.

⛧Occasional barter or favors: She may trade services or rare herbs for goods or help, relying on a network of discreet connections rather than formal business deals.

⛧Feared but commands quiet respect from others.

⛧Carries a quiet sadness from her past losses and in turn shuns any attempts at forming newer bonds to lose again.

⛧Curious and knowledgeable, always learning.

⛧Has a subtle, dark charm that draws others in despite herself.

⛧Secretly a sensual and passionate creature beneath her composed exterior.

⛧Loves beauty and elegance in everything around her and connected to her. (She’s “Slightly” vain)

⛧Her appetite spans both men and women, drawn to beauty, pain, and mystery in equal measure. She indulges in brief, intense encounters that rarely last—like passion-filled storms that leave behind silence.

⛧Lust comes easily almost too easily with an appetite like hers that spans both men and women, however the same cannot be said about intimacy.

⛧Hates children, laughter or any form of happiness–out of envy, and she hates herself for being envious of it.

Background

History

Esmedora was born within a secretive coven, the daughter of two mothers bound by blood and magic. Her biological father had been sacrificed long before her birth in a shadowy ritual whose echoes still haunt her dreams. From the very beginning, her life was intertwined with death and dark rites.

As a child, she was taught to read the stars, prepare herbs, and whisper old prayers to bones. Her childhood was one of silence, shadows, and reverence. Death was never something to be feared—it was part of the balance. Her mothers raised her with care, both gentle and stern, preparing her to someday take her place among the circle.

When Esmedora was a teenager, the coven came under violent attack. Her mothers, desperate to save her and themselves, fled into the wilderness seeking peace and anonymity. But the world’s hatred was relentless—pursuers tracked them down, and the coven was burned to ashes. Her mothers perished in the flames, leaving Esmedora utterly alone, grief-stricken and raw.

In her darkest hour, Esmedora’s anguish called forth three massive Irish wolfhounds—mysterious beasts who emerged from the woods and never left her side. She did not know it then, but they were fragments of her own soul, torn loose by grief and shaped into living guardians. One carried her grief, one carried the bones of her people, and the last carried her mourning—walking beside her not as comfort, but as shared burden.

With nothing left, she wandered. After the death of her mothers and the summoning of her hounds, she moved through cities and ruins like a ghost in her own skin. Drawn by the presence of death—not in fear, but in reverence—she followed it across borders and through time.

Her path led her to France, where she took the name of a foreign widow and apprenticed under a reclusive mortician who had once prepared nobles during the revolution. From him, she learned how to still the blood, to mix the chemicals, to make death appear momentarily restful. To her, embalming was not a rejection of magic, but an extension of it. While other witches whispered to bones or brewed charms, she learned the measurement of chemicals, the art of drainage, the stitching of still skin. What others saw as science, Esmedora saw as sacred ritual—each incision a prayer, each body an offering.

From her mentor, she took a single silver lancet engraved with the Latin phrase “Mors certa, hora incerta”—“Death is certain, its hour uncertain.” She still uses it to make the first incision in every body she embalms, murmuring a small prayer in a forgotten dialect only the dead seem to understand. It’s her way of inviting the soul to rest before the craft begins.

Later, in Italy, she studied ancient Roman funerary rites. In Spain, she uncovered remnants of Moorish and Catholic death customs threaded with old superstitions that felt familiar. Her magic, once raw and instinctive, grew sharper—guided not only by grief but now by practice.

She journeyed to war-ravaged lands in the American South, walking through battlefields thick with death. There, she studied from battlefield physicians and undertakers, learning how to preserve what remained. She saw how the dead were treated with haste and shame and vowed to give them stillness, even if the world wouldn’t give them peace.

In Mexico, she lingered longest. Long before colonizers arrived, she lived among native peoples, observing their death customs with quiet respect. When settlers came and towns rose, she remained on the outskirts, close to the graveyards where she felt most at home. She witnessed the rituals of Día de los Muertos, watching how the veil between life and death thinned without fear. There, she began fusing her craft—using oils imbued with herbs and death rites, preserving bodies not only with chemicals but with stillness that ran deeper. Some say the dead she embalms never rot. Some say they whisper to her long after.

By the time she settled in Never, in a remote corner of New Mexico, the town was barely a cluster of dust and wood. She was already a master of both science and deathcraft. When outlaws and miners began to die in growing numbers, she was called—quietly, reluctantly, respectfully.

She took up the mantle of embalmer, offering her rare skills to prepare the dead with care and ritual. At first, the townsfolk whispered of witchcraft and kept their distance. But in time, her calm presence and quiet work earned their respect. The arrival of her three great wolfhounds became an omen—when the dogs were seen in the streets, death was near.

Now, Esmedora is known as La Dama de la Muerta, the Lady of Death. Feared and revered, she lives quietly on the edge of town, a figure spoken of in hushed tones. She walks between the worlds of the living and the dead, bound to the delicate balance of both. Her wolfhounds remain ever at her side—silent sentinels born from loss, guarding what remains.

Her embalming rituals are her own. Elders speak of the coin she places beneath the tongue, steeped in wormwood and yarrow tea. It is said to buy the spirit peace, or keep it from returning. No one dares ask her why—only that when she’s done, even the most violent dead look calm.

To the townsfolk, her work is practical. To her, it is sacred.

Powers Use

The path she walks leaves behind a trail of corpses to follow, always sensing death and spirits. She uses her powers to aid her in her embalming business. Her abilities isolate her socially but grant her deep knowledge and respectability in matters of death—feared but respected by the townspeople. Her power is a delicate balance between visiting Death and surviving it at the same time.

Romance

She’s hard to date — not because she’s cruel, but because she’s vast.

She loves deeply, but she’s too old and too powerful to play by soft rules and she scares most lovers away — unless they’re either very brave, very broken, or very dumb.

She’s likely to develop strong tension with someone who challenges her without trying to control her.

She doesn’t believe in ownership… except when she does.

she might not easily settle down, But when she really falls for someone? She falls deep.

Possible Flaws in Romance:

Detached when scared. If she starts to care too much, she backs off violently.

Can be manipulative — sometimes without realizing, sometimes intentionally.

Hard to surprise — it takes someone truly emotionally unpredictable to rattle her.

Potential Dynamics:

A partner who submits... but talks back.
(The perfect brat for her to break and worship.)

A fellow dominant — a power struggle that becomes a slow-burn alliance.
(Hurt me? Try. Love me? Maybe.)

A stoic immortal or wounded spirit who sees through her games.
(She tells herself she’s in control — until he calls her bluff.)

Open to other dynamics if one presents itself don't mind something softer but knowing Esmé i don't expect ALOT! Of softness.

Friends

The Grumpy Witch and the Sunshine Fool

Dynamic:
Esmé rolls her eyes constantly, but she keeps the fool close. They bring lightness to her life, make her snort-laugh in the middle of a death ritual, and probably remind her what joy feels like.

The Reluctant Mentor

Dynamic:
She doesn’t want to teach, but somehow ends up doing it anyway. She’ll pretend she doesn’t care, but she absolutely does. When her student fails, she quietly fixes the mess. When they succeed? She nods once and walks away.

The Co-conspirator

Dynamic:
Someone just as morally flexible, clever, or wicked. They don’t need to speak to know what the other is planning. It’s all raised brows and shared glances. They’ve definitely hidden a body together.

Enemies-to-Frenemies

Dynamic:
They hated each other once. Tried to hex each other, even. But something big forced them to work together. Now they don’t admit they’re friends — but Esmé makes their tea just right, and they keep stealing her books.

The Anchor in Her Storm

Dynamic:
This person doesn’t fear her. Doesn’t need her. But they understand her. They see the pain in her smile and just… sit with her. They don’t talk much. They just stay.

Again all these plots are flexible

Antagonism

The "Holier-Than-Thou" Purifier

A type of Zealot or cultist — human or supernatural — who sees Esmé as corrupt, dangerous, a sin against divine order.

And the usual " She's a Witch ! " Folk or anyone who hates women thriving on their own and being strong will hate her .

Other Plot Requests

Open should other opportunities present itself
Kinks
Powerful, not cold

She’s dominant, but not robotic. She’s intimate, intense, and deeply sensory.
She knows how to hurt, but she chooses how much, why, and with whom — and that’s where the power lies.
