Alice is a PURITAN WITCH with ELEMENTAL powers.
Alice Storen is a woman of independence, strength, and restless energy. She’s as much at home in the saddle as she is among the ranch’s sprawling acres, her skills as a horsewoman renowned by anyone who’s had the pleasure of witnessing her ride. Unmarried and disinterested in the idea of a husband or children, Alice has always been more focused on her freedom than on societal expectations. She’s never once been tempted by the idea of a traditional life, preferring the wide-open spaces of the ranch and the wild, unpredictable nature of her powers.
Alice has a deep connection to the earth, the wind, and the sky. She can summon rain in a drought or calm a storm before it hits, though she prefers to keep her powers subtle, using them only when absolutely necessary. Her control over nature is as strong as her determination to carve out a life on her own terms.
Despite her independent nature, Alice feels a restlessness she can’t shake. She’s loyal to her brother, Willard, and supports him in every way she can, especially after the tragedies that have haunted him. But as she spends her days tending to the ranch and navigating the strange dynamics of Never, she can’t ignore the gnawing feeling that there’s more for her out there — A life that might not be bound by the same rules or constraints. While she loves her brother dearly, Alice feels like something is calling her beyond the ranch, and she’s not sure how much longer she can keep that desire for freedom buried.
Lucille Blackburn
Lucille Blackburn is a striking woman with a commanding presence that can’t be ignored. She runs the Grand Victoria Opera House, a lavish venue that attracts the town’s wealthiest and most influential citizens. Beneath her polished, sophisticated exterior, however, lies a dark secret: Lucille is secretly a lesser demon, sent to the mortal realm with the task of coaxing wayward spirits toward damnation.
Instead, she’s become far more invested in cultivating her own life of indulgence and luxury. Her days are filled with lavish dinners, opulent dresses, and flirtations with the town’s elite. She thrives in the sensual pleasures of life, pursuing carnality and indulgence with abandon, rarely thinking twice about the consequences of her actions.
While she keeps up appearances as a refined businesswoman, managing the Opera House with impeccable taste and charm, Lucille’s true focus is on satisfying her own desires. The spirits she was meant to guide or claim are more of an afterthought to her — When they cross her path, it’s just another opportunity for amusement, not duty. In Never, she’s made herself untouchable, using her beauty, wit, and power to maintain her position as one of the town’s most alluring figures, even as her true nature waits, hidden, just beneath the surface.
Sidney Grey
Sidney is a PURITAN WITCH with ELEMENTAL common powers.
Sidney Grey is the youngest son of Never’s esteemed mayor — A boy of privilege, charm, and restless curiosity. On the cusp of adulthood, he is caught between the expectations of his family and the wild pull of the frontier beyond his father’s well-ordered streets. Raised on etiquette and ambition, Sidney has been groomed for leadership, but something inside him resists the path laid before him. There is an itch beneath his skin, a feeling like forgotten words on the tip of his tongue.
What Sidney doesn’t know is that his father is a demon, his mother a witch, and the strange, flickering talents surfacing within him are the inheritance of both. Shadows lengthen when he is angry. Candles die when he enters a room. Sometimes, when he dreams, he wakes with soot on his fingertips and the distant echo of a voice he does not recognize.
Theodore Jackson
Theo and his older brother Edward grew up together in a working-class family in Manassas, Virginia. Their schoolteacher mother ensured their education and encouraged their aspirations. Six years ago, after several trips west and a good deal of careful research, the brothers took their savings and invested in a modest, well-kept general store in the growing town of Never, New Mexico. The two have since become fixtures in the town, their business an undeniable success. Lately, they have been looking to expand into other investments to serve the booming population, and have been at loggerheads: Edward, the more disciplined and cautious of the two, remains unconvinced by many of his younger, more impulsive brother’s ideas.
Clara Klein
Clara Klein is the new schoolteacher in Never, a town where the air always seems to hum with secrets and the land holds stories of its own. Clara is unmarried, having never found a match who could quiet the restlessness in her heart. She is a natural optimist, with a deep love for nature and a genuine affinity for the children in her care. Her classroom is a sanctuary of warmth and encouragement, where she fosters curiosity, kindness, and a love for learning. The children are drawn to her gentle spirit, eager to soak in her lessons and feel her unwavering belief in their potential.
Clara’s passion for the outdoors is also evident, and on her rare days off, she can often be found wandering the hills and meadows that surround the town. Nature has always been a source of solace for her, its simple beauty a balm for the emotional scars she’s long carried.
Though she exudes positivity, Clara’s past is marked by tragedy. Many years ago, she lost her fiancé in a tragic accident that left her broken, forcing her to leave her old life behind and start anew. She never speaks of it, but the pain still lingers just beneath her serene surface, a silent companion to her every step.
What Clara doesn’t know is that her presence in Never is no accident. A hidden power stirs within the earth around her — An ancient force that seems drawn to her, one she’s unknowingly connected to through her love of nature and her personal loss. As Clara continues to settle into her new life, she will soon learn that Never isn’t just a place of refuge, but a town with a past that will inevitably intertwine with hers.
Clarence Barron
Clarence has always been easy to underestimate. As a child, he was frail and bookish, a stark contrast to the two strapping brothers who followed him. His father expected little and his mother even less. When his father died, he dared to hope that the world–or at least the rest of his own family–might start to take him seriously. Instead, his younger brother stepped into the role of man of the house without so much as a word of discussion, and Clarence settled into the kind of resentment that either poisons a man from within…or sets him free. Whatever his private truth might have been, he refused to box himself up small to fit the old container designed by his family. He left them back east and headed out west, where a man could supposedly make his own destiny.
Several decades (and deviances) later, he’s become one of Never’s most well-established residents. The demon that heeds his commands is a double-edged sword, but even his detractors can’t ignore the political, financial and social influence that she’s given him.
Margaret “Maggie” Bell
Maggie Bell is the heart and soul of the Silver Hills Hotel, a welcoming refuge nestled in the center of Never. With her upbeat demeanor, ready smile, and the warmth of someone who genuinely cares for the comfort of others, Maggie makes everyone who walks through the hotel doors feel like family. Whether she’s personally overseeing the meals in the dining room or offering a reassuring word to a guest, she radiates a sense of hospitality that has earned her the trust of the town.
Unlike some of her more subtle angelic counterparts, Maggie isn’t content to sit back quietly: She’s actively involved, using her innate sense of right and wrong to keep an eye on the darkness that lingers in the corners of Never. If something feels off, if someone is being wronged, Maggie is the first to speak up. She believes that the fight for goodness isn’t passive, and that even the smallest action can spark a ripple of change.
Her relationship with her brother Otto is one of quiet support, but Maggie’s true mission is clear: To help the lost find their way home, and to ensure that even in a town as strange as Never, there’s always a light shining to guide them.
Gladys Daugherty, aka Molly
Strictly speaking, Molly Daugherty doesn’t really exist. Neither did Gladys Daugherty, or Gilda Cartwright before her, or Glenna Gordon before her. None of them lasted longer than a series of letters, each one sealed with a perfumed kiss and mailed to a man looking for love in the personal advertisements of various Midwestern papers. After the letters, a meeting; then a wedding; then a few weeks or months of wedded bliss before tragic accidents befell Mr. Gordon, Mr. Cartwright, and Mr. Daugherty, each in his turn. Each one’s worldly possessions went to their newly-minted widow, who sold everything for a quick profit and then…summarily disappeared.
Of course, the money of a relatively poor lonely heart doesn’t stretch very far, and sometimes a woman needs to make ends meet while she’s looking for her next true love. The Silk Rose is just a starting point for a lady with ambition.
Felix Salazar
Felix Salazar is the most sought-after barber in Never, not just for his razor’s precision or the indulgent warmth of his lather, but for the experience he makes of every visit. His shop, nestled off a quieter side street, is a dim, fragrant haven where time slows down and pleasures linger. Felix himself is a sensualist to the bone: Graceful in his movements, silver-tongued in conversation, and always clad in crisp waistcoats that smell faintly of clove and smoke. He’ll remember your name, your drink, your dreams, and he’ll listen, truly listen, as you pour them out in the chair.
Beneath that velvet charm, though, lies his darker calling as a demon, placed in Never to seduce the weary, the lonesome, and the damned into taking one small step further into Hell’s embrace. He doesn’t pressure, he tempts. A whispered suggestion, a shared secret, a decadent favor with just the right price. His scissors shape more than hair; they trim the edges of a soul’s resistance, snipping away hesitation thread by thread.
Duke Aguilar
Like generations of his forefathers in Argentina, Duke Aguilar has always had a way with horses. Even the most spirited stallion or ornery pack horse would yield to his murmured words and calming hands. When his family fled the growing political and social unrest of their homeland, that skill proved just as valuable to the ranchers of California as the ones in Buenos Aires. For years, he coasted on those talents and his charm, weaponizing a sheepish smile and soulful eyes, getting what he wanted with as little effort as possible.
That worked perfectly well until he ran headfirst into Gloria Mata, whose determined disinterest drove him to absolute distraction. Winning her heart took time and effort, but when she finally gave him her hand, she also offered him the truth. She was a witch–the first he had ever known, though he’d long believed in magic. To protect her and soon enough, their children, Duke left his family legacy behind and bent his skill with horses into a slightly different direction. In Never, he runs the livery and works at the forge, with his children following in his footsteps. If the closest he gets to a horse these days is hammering on its shoes… He tries not to let nostalgia sour his overall satisfaction.
