Lucille Blackburn is a striking woman with a commanding presence that can’t be ignored. She runs the Grand Victoria Opera House, a lavish venue that attracts the town’s wealthiest and most influential citizens. Beneath her polished, sophisticated exterior, however, lies a dark secret: Lucille is secretly a lesser demon, sent to the mortal realm with the task of coaxing wayward spirits toward damnation.
Instead, she’s become far more invested in cultivating her own life of indulgence and luxury. Her days are filled with lavish dinners, opulent dresses, and flirtations with the town’s elite. She thrives in the sensual pleasures of life, pursuing carnality and indulgence with abandon, rarely thinking twice about the consequences of her actions.
While she keeps up appearances as a refined businesswoman, managing the Opera House with impeccable taste and charm, Lucille’s true focus is on satisfying her own desires. The spirits she was meant to guide or claim are more of an afterthought to her — When they cross her path, it’s just another opportunity for amusement, not duty. In Never, she’s made herself untouchable, using her beauty, wit, and power to maintain her position as one of the town’s most alluring figures, even as her true nature waits, hidden, just beneath the surface.
Deacon Black
The mysterious leader of a gang of upstarts. Once a snake oil selling charlatan and professional Liar with a tendency to take in strays, Deacon found his way to Never, drawn by the influx of tourists just waiting to be fleeced. He settled there, built up a little family of strays stitched together by his enigmatic charm and propensity make young disenfranchised minds mistake him for a mentor.
Then a man named Cathal Keary came to town. He and Deacon Black became fast friends, Deacon having the charm and the ambition to make big plans and get people on board, and Cathal having the realism and critical mind to put those plans into motion. Together they opened the Buffalo Heart and sculpted their small gang of strays into a well oiled train robbing machine.
Greedy, ambitious, and ruthless. He is kind only to those who are loyal to him, and brutal to those who prove otherwise. He lets Cathal handle the business side of things while he happily reaps the rewards and pulls the strings from the background, usually for his own entertainment.
The Bad Hand Gang
The Bad Hand are a gang of train robbers that operate outside of Never, New Mexico. Controlled by a mysterious figure by the name of Deacon Black. Their rules are simple. Obey Deacon, keep the Buffalo Heart gambling house running smooth and clean, no criminal activity within the town limits, and the gang always gets a cut, no matter what their side hustle might be.
Loyalty is everything, and disloyalty, even in small amounts, is severely, ruthlessly punished.
Their headquarters, the Buffalo Heart in the sketchier part of Never called Mystic, is run by the former, presumed dead bandit outlaw Cathal under his new surname Keary. As Deacon’s right hand man, he’s the one most of the boys deal with day-to-day, and the one that usually hands out Deacon’s orders to those that Deacon doesn’t care to handle himself.
Teddy Runes
Life on the road without any true sustenance has made Teddy weak in terms of power; his one saving grace is that he’s skilled enough with the inner turmoils of man, and made enough at the progression of society that he can find himself an in anywhere a hired hand is needed.
Having found himself running with the Bad Hand Gang, better known as those schmucks around the Buffalo Heart gambling din; Teddy’s mood has hit an all time high. That is, since the destruction of his original home. To most people, he’s a man of mystery and secrets, never giving his real name and constantly changing the topic away from where he came.
Elias Frey
Eli Frey is a lesser demon, and the former thrall of one more powerful. He started in his demon’s service as a wooden puppet carved from a blood-soaked tree. He was willful, wild and disobedient, but a horrific rebellion cost him everything, from his wooden body to his sense of self. His punishment was to be carved into a new kind of puppet, one made of flesh and desperate servitude. And so, he comes to Never weak and alone, and looking for a new master to kneel to.
Mr. Howl
Mr. Howl is a freshly minted demon, crashing into the outskirts of Never straight from Hell. With partial amnesia about how to be a human and no knowledge on how to be a demon, Howl is a hot mess and a nuisance and terror to the community. Most of all, he is a danger to himself. Will he figure it out or be smote back into the underworld?
Alaka’i Roden
Alaka’i Rhoden is known around Never as the resident Doctor and all-round Wise Man to solve or help the residents of the town. The few who earn his help are beholden to contracts and to utmost secrecy, but that doesn’t seem to worry them. Having arrived in Never twenty one years ago, Alaka’i has all but made his place in town and is comfortably suited to this new way of life. But he never seems to age, does he? Isn’t that weird to you?
Hawthorne Lichfield
Reverend Hawthorne Lichfield is the reverend of the House of His Eternal Glory, a small parish church and source of shelter located on the Hawthorne Homestead. The church has the unconventional belief that one cannot abstain from sin if they have never sinned. Questionable activities often unfold at Eternal Glory that serve as an outlet for one’s deepest or darkest desires. If Eternal Glory sounds like a cult, it is. But it entices members with the promise of a better life and the constant reminder that it is never too late to repent for the sins weighing on one’s soul.
